It’s common for new entrepreneurs to think that everyone is there client. The truth is everyone isn’t your client. You want to build your business knowing your target audience. You must discover how to find that client and grow your business.
“In business you cannot be everything to everyone. It confuses the consumer.” – Wendy Nicole
You must decide to focus on the clients you want to attract for your business to grow into being profitable and sustainable. Trying to market to everyone can lead you to failing before you even start.
One of the ways to find your ideal client is to give your services/products away for free. Yep, you read right! This is the way you find your ideal client and build your business at the same time.
I know exactly what it feels like to be an entrepreneur…I know what it’s like to not know how to build a business, find your clients, and make your business profitable. I started my business with no money down and a whole lot of faith.
...How do you identify your ideal client if you don’t know who your target audience is?
I used this practical tool to find my ideal client and build my business. When I launched my nonprofit consulting business, I offered my services free of charge. Sounds crazy, right? Many people told me I was insane for doing this because I had the knowledge and expertise in the industry.
However, what most failed to realize I was launching a business with no credibility in the market. I had to build the credibility, work out the kinks in my processes and even identify my ideal client all at the same time.
Through my method of madness, I was able to build my business through organic traffic (word of mouth) because my clients saw the value and results in the services I was offering.
People must find value in what you are selling before they buy it. You can’t put a price on it, until people can see the value in what you have to offer. At the end of the day your ideal client wants to know how you can solve their dilemma.
Your ideal client will invest in your product/service when they find the value in what you have to offer. In turn if they happen to enjoy the product/service this client that you gave a freebie to – in turn becomes a client and a brand ambassador for your business.
They tell others about your services and then in turn you grow your business. The next clients that walk through the door, you can start to add a price to the services/products you offer because now your ideal client finds the value in what you have to offer.
The # 1 Step to Take in Identifying Your Ideal Client
You need to create a client profile which includes the following information:
1. Who do I enjoy working with? e.g. social entrepreneurs, ministry leaders, students, etc.
2. Demographics – age, gender, geographical location, job
3. What are their needs?
4. What problems do they need solved?
5. Which clients refer me the most?
Interview your current clients to understand their needs by asking lots of questions. This will help you market to your ideal client and ensure your products/services are what they need. Once you discover your ideal client, stick with that client profile and make sure you add a price to your services/product.
